Kids Need Chiropractic Too!

Specific Chiropractic Care for Healthy Children

Every child deserves the best opportunity to express health and function at their maximum potential.  It is a child’s nervous system that controls and coordinates their amazing growth and development as they progress through life.  Because the nervous system (spinal cord & nerves) runs through the spine, maintaining proper spinal alignment is crucial to ensure that the nervous system functions as optimally as possible.  Many factors can contribute to a baby’s spine becoming subluxated.  Subluxation is a misalignment and restriction within the spine that results in unhealthy stress and strain on the baby’s developing spinal cord and nervous system.

The positioning of the baby within the mother’s womb can often times cause subluxation.  Breech presentation and other forms of intrauterine constraint can put abnormal stress and strain on the spine and nervous system of a developing child.  This is just one reason why the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association  (ICPA) recommends chiropractic care for moms during pregnancy.  When mom’s spine and pelvis functions properly, intrauterine constrain is much less likely and the baby can pass through the birth canal much easier.  This may decrease the likelihood of birth interventions like, vacuum, forceps and Cesarean section.

Chiropractic Care for Infants & Babies

Proper Alignment is Vital for Normal Development

While childbirth is designed to be a natural and beautiful process, both mom and child are put under extreme amounts of physical and emotional stress during the delivery process. As the baby passes through the birth canal, the pelvic joints of mom expand and the cranial bones/joints of the baby compress to allow passage through the birth canal.  In many cases, the bones and joints of mom and baby return to normal position.  In other cases, the transition back to normal position does not fully occur.  In these cases it is vital that proper alignment be reintroduced for normal neurological function and development to occur.  Signs and symptoms of subluxation and neurological stress include SIDS, cerebral palsy, failure to thrive, colic, digestive disorders, asthma, difficulty breast feeding, seizures, sensory processing disorder, ear infections and many more.

80% of Newborns Have Spinal Misalignment

According to recent scientific research performed by a group of medical doctors; during “normal” vaginal deliveries, up to 100 pounds of twisting force can be placed on an infants neck causing subluxation.  Supporting studies showed that 80% of infants were found to have vertebral misalignment (subluxation) of the upper neck causing interference to neurological function.  Birth interventions including forceps extraction, vacuum extraction and cesarean section drastically increase the probability and severity of birth trauma and subluxation.  In conclusion, they recommended “all newborns should have their spines checked by chiropractors.”  The ICPA recommends that children should have their spine and nervous system checked by a chiropractor as soon as possible after birth and with each major milestone.

Adjustments for kids are incredibly safe! The amount of force used to adjust an infant or newborn is similar to the amount of pressure used to check for the ripeness of a tomato or piece of fruit. In our Encinitas chiropractic office we use very gentle and specific adjustments with no twisting or rotation of the spine.

Chiropractic Care For Kids & Teens

Chiropractic care makes it’s most powerful impact on children.  A pediatric chiropractor can help parents ensure their children grow up happy and healthy, expressing their full potential.  As children continue to grow, their spines undergo many form of trauma as they learn to crawl, walk, play and become involved in sports.  It has been said that a child undergoes enough falls in one day to put an adult in the hospital.  In addition to falls and accidents, many children spend ample amount of time sitting in school, watching television, playing video games and carrying heaving backpacks.  These activities can put a tremendous amount of strain on the spine even though they may not be painful or even noticed at the time.

Numerous studies show that chiropractic can help children with asthma, allergies, ADD/ADHD, headaches, ear infections, scoliosis, reflux, colic and many more.  By maintaining the body free of subluxations, the child’s nervous system is able to function properly. This, in turn, will allow the body to have a better chance at having a strong immune system (decreasing illness and disease), preventing injuries and building a strong and healthy body!  Chiropractors do not treat disease, they help to correct areas of imbalance within the spine and nervous system that interfere with the body’s natural ability to heal itself.  It is never too early or too late to have your child’s spine and nervous system checked by a chiropractor.
